In 1957 the Louisiana State Legislature appropriated over one million dollars with the promise of more appropriations later for the D’Arbonne Lake Project. This lake was completed in 1963 at a cost of approximately three million dollars.
Lake D’Arbonne, 80 percent in Union Parish and 20 percent in Lincoln Parish, covers 16,000 acres, is 15 miles in length, and has ashoreline of 100 miles. It is an average of eight feet deep, three miles wide at its widest point with an average width of a mile and a half.
Bayou D’Arbonne is the chief contributing source, but it is also fed by Little Bayou D’Arbonne, Middle Fork Bayou and Bayou Corney. A dam built across Bayou D’Arbonne and spillway structure provides a means of holding the water in the lake while controlling the level. It makes available a vast source of water for industrial, agricultural, municipal, and recreational purposes.
Stocked with fish by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, the lake is fulfilling its expectations in attracting fishermen. Many campsites, commercial landings and summer homes have been constructed. An air strip has been obtained, and is now in use near the dam.
On Hwy 2 West you will find our very own state park complete with cabins, tennis courts, swimming pool, boat ramp, fishing pier, trailer hook-ups, meeting rooms, and pavilions. You will not find a cleaner park anywhere in the state.
